Board Members
The Friends of Immanuel Board Members serve in diverse roles that include leadership, academics, finance, law, and technology. With passion to care for the underprivileged and help raise up the poor in India through higher education, they contribute their various gifts, skills, and ideas.
David and Shelly Goodnight
David Goodnight is a trial lawyer and partner at Stoel Rives, LLP. David graduated from Greenville University, Valparaiso University and Yale Law School. Following clerkships in the United States District Court and United States Court of Appeals, he began practice as a trial lawyer in Seattle, Washington, where he lives today.
Shelly Goodnight is the wife of David, mother of three, and grandmother of four. She is a retired elementary school teacher as well as a Homeschool educator. Her travels to India over the past 15 years have been life changing.
Daniel and Diane Kurtz
Daniel A. Kurtz served fr1998 until 2-23 as a Chief Financial Officer and then a Senior Vice-President of a foundation. Prior to this employment, he was in various areas of finance management with an automotive supplier, Harvard Industries, Inc. from 1973-1998. He currently serves on the boards of other foundations that assist the poor. He is a 1973 graduate of Spring Arbor University with majors in Business and Psychology and holds a Certified Fiduciary and Investment Risk Specialist (CFIRS) designation.
Diane Kurtz served as Director of Cross Cultural Studies for most of her career at Spring Arbor University before retiring in 2023. For 32 years, learning about other cultures and helping students learn to be culturally competent through study abroad was her role. She has had the privilege of visiting India and Immanuel several times, including being there for the dedication of the land on which the campus has been built!
Dr. James Mannoia
Jim is President Emeritus of Greenville University. He taught philosophy and physics or served as Dean or Provost at several colleges and universities including Westmont, Grove City, Houghton, Greenville, the University of Zimbabwe, and Old Dominion. He has consulted around the world including for the government of Rwanda, in Iraq, and for institutions in the US, Europe, Australia, Africa, and South America. For over a decade Jim was Senior Fellow for International Development in the CCCU. He continues to serve on multiple boards including Hope Africa University in Burundi. He grew up in Brazil, and he lived and launched student programs in southern Africa for 2 years. Jim is married to Elizabeth and has two children.
Dr. Wayne McCown
Dr. Wayne McCown has 45 years of faculty/teaching experience in higher education including 28 years in academic administration at six schools that include Seattle Pacific University, Roberts Wesleyan University, and Azusa Pacific University. He has served as a trustee for academic institutions and holds the titles Provost Emeritus and Founding Dean Emeritus. He has served for 18 years on the Friends board for Hope Africa University, and 14 years as Visiting Faculty.
Dr. Wayne McCown resides in Rochester, NY with his wife of 62 years, Dr. Darlene McCown. Though officially “retired,” both are still actively engaged in higher education.
Ethan Goodnight
Ethan Goodnight is a PhD Candidate in American Studies at Harvard. He first visited India when he was 9 years old, an experience which opened his eyes. Now, Ethan is a Religion and Public Life Fellow at Harvard where he researches religious and racial history of early Evangelicalism in a global context. He has a bachelor’s degree in History and Philosophy from Spring Arbor University and a master’s degree in the Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. At Harvard, he has taught religion, politics, and history at the College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Harvard Divinity School. In recent years, Ethan visited Immanuel, where he lectured and spoke to the students. He is also on the board of a Religious History and Archives Committee. He and his wife Maria and their son Russell (and a baby girl on the way) live near Boston.
Patrick Patterson
Patrick has over 35 years of diverse Camping experience including COO of Warm Beach Camp. He is on faculty for CCCA’s Thriving Boards and serves as board chairman of Sister Connection, and he is on the board of Friends of Immanuel. He has one son, Kaleb, who lives in New York City. His hobbies include hiking, fishing, hunting, and dabbling in landscaping.
Dr. Rob Nicholson
Rob holds a Doctorate and a Master’s degree, and he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business from Spring Arbor University (1982). Rob ultimately began a career in Residential Real Estate. With 22 years’ experience in residential sales & marketing, his personal achievements have earned him numerous awards throughout the Seattle Real Estate Community. He has helped hundreds of families buy, sell and lease Real Estate and consistently ranks among the top 2% of all Real Estate agents nationwide.
Hal Hoxie
Hal Hoxie is president of Butterfield Memorial Foundation’s (BMF). Hoxie comes to the Foundation most recently from an academic institution where he served as President since 2010. Before stepping into the role of college president, Hal spent his career in the United States Air Force. Retiring as a Colonel, he most recently served as the Division Chief in the Office of Legislative Liaison, stationed at the Pentagon in Washington D.C.
Colonel Hoxie earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Economics from Eastern Oregon State College, an M.A. in Sports Administration from University of Northern Colorado, Air Command and Staff College, and an M.S. in Strategic Studies from Marine Corps University.
An accomplished athlete, Hoxie holds national coaching certifications in baseball, basketball, soccer and sports training. Hal and his wife, Kathy, who is also a graduate of Central Christian College, have four adult married sons and twelve grandchildren.
Steve Roe
Steve Roe is the general manager of Roe Motors, a Buick and GMC dealership in Grants Pass, OR. Under Steve’s leadership, Roe Motors earned the 2016 Better Business Bureau “Business of the Year” for Oregon and SW Washington. The Roe family was selected as 2015 Family Business of the Year by Oregon State University Austin School of Business under the “Family Harmony” category.
Since earning the rank of Eagle Scout, Steve has been personally committed to community organizing and contribution. Examples include work with the Chamber of Commerce, Asante Health System board, Rogue Gateway Rotary, Southern Oregon Hospice, Mercy Flights, Friends of Immanuel and Crater Lake Boy Scout Council.
Steve has an Automotive Marketing and Accounting degree from Northwood University and a Masters in Management degree from Southern Oregon University. He lives in Grants Pass, Oregon with his wife Kristi (a 1st grade teacher at Allen Dale Elementary) and Hope and Finn, their registered therapy dogs. His two daughters are grown with five grandchildren. Steve enjoys Diamond Lake, reading, computer technology and giving back to others.
Dr. Caleb Chan
Dr. Caleb Chan is Dean for the Gainey School of Business at Spring Arbor University. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Dr. Chan came to the U.S. to further his education in 1985 in King College with a degree in Economics and Business. He went on and completed his Ph.D. in Business Administration with a specialization in Decisions Sciences from Georgia State University (Atlanta, Georgia) in 1993. Dr. Chan then joined the faculty at Spring Arbor University and has been teaching in the MBA and undergraduate business programs since 1993. His areas of expertise include statistical analysis, forecasting, and international business.
Outside the SAU community, he is involved as board member for a financial organization and a non-profit organization providing low-cost housing and trauma informed care to youth who aged out of the foster system in the Greater Jackson area.
Dr. Chan has been married to his wife, Koch (who also came from Hong Kong), for 34 years. They have two sons, Clifton (31), a high school English teacher in South Korea (after five years of teaching in Indonesia), and Chester (28), an electrical engineer working in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Carl Brannon
Carl Brannon is the superintendent of a community organization where he assists leaders and communities, with 40 years of experience leading and serving others. Carl has been married to Kim, a school teacher, for 34 years and they have 4 adult children; Anna, Jeremiah, Joshua, and Sarah. Carl has made several trips to India, which have greatly impacted his life and perspective. Wherever Carl has lived and served, he has networked with other service organizations and businesses to help address issues of poverty and brokenness in order to provide opportunities for growth and healing.
Jeff Finley
Jeff Finley is the executive editor of Light + Life, an online magazine focusing on the intersection of religion and culture. Jeff joined Light + Life in 2011 after a dozen years of reporting and editing for Sun-Times Media in the Chicago area. He and his wife, Jen, are the parents of a teenage son, Drew. Jeff has a bachelor’s degree in English from Greenville University and a master’s degree in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois with additional graduate studies in journalism at Southern Illinois University. He also serves on the Greenville University Alumni Board and the Gene R. Alston Memorial Foundation Board.
Kaleb Patterson
Kaleb is a tech executive based in New York City with roots in the Pacific Northwest, where he was introduced to Immanuel through Friends of Immanuel board chair David Goodnight. Kaleb first visited Immanuel’s campus in 2018, where he was moved by the stories of the students he met and the work Immanuel’s leadership and faculty is doing to raise up those most in need in India. He has served on the Friends of Immanuel board since 2022. Kaleb also serves on the board of Equestrian Vaulting USA as the Director of IT.
Daryl Miller
Daryl, originally from Kansas, spent his formative years after age 13 in India, where his dad worked for the U.S. Department of State. After attending American International School in New Delhi, he graduated high school from Kodaikanal school, a K-12 boarding school in South India. His adventures included riding rented motorcycles all over Katmandu, Nepal for a week, then hiking to the base camp of Mount Everest with five other high school friends. The family traveled around the world several times to and from India. Daryl has therefore always loved international travel, particularly to London and the UK. Daryl has served as a member of many boards, particularly related to education. Daryl holds an MBA from the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, and a CPA from Illinois and Washington State. He is the CEO of Fischer Companies.
Dr. Rob McKenna
Dr. Rob McKenna, CEO of WiLD Leaders, is a renowned expert in leadership development, celebrated for his groundbreaking work in fostering trust, driving performance, and connecting business strategy with the human side of leadership. Ranked among the top 30 most influential I-O Psychologists alive today, Dr. McKenna has over two decades of research and practical experience that position him as a thought leader in crafting sustainable, people-centered organizations.
Eva Weiler
Eva M. Weiler is a Partner at Shook Hardy & Bacon in Orange County, California, regularly serving as the lead in-court lawyer defending corporations in science-driven class actions, coordinated proceedings, and individual matters. She graduated with her J.D., cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School in 2004. Her awards include Lawdragon 500: Leading Litigators in America (2023-2025).
Audrey Wagner
Audrey Wagner has an undergraduate degree in Philosophy and graduated degrees in Theology and Counseling. She works full-time as a Legal Assistant. She has side businesses in portrait photography and publishing and is experienced in writing, editing, photography, videography, graphic design, and wordpress.org web building. She enjoys reading, nature, time with friends, and using her creative and technology skills to serve her community, her clients, and Friends of Immanuel.
